mostly downtown, in black and white.

21 Mar 2011

Okay, so the very top one was taken at MoMA. And the bottom one is in Prospect Heights. But all of the other photographs — including ones of my deal friends Michael (visiting from Toronto) and Shannon, shot on Fuji Neopan 400 with the Zeiss Biogon, on Peter’s Leica — were taken below Houston Street. Leicas love black and white, goodness me!

Speaking of which: my Leica finally has a name. More on that soon.

Great FACES here … I love seeing expressions captured, pure and simple.

    Nicely done!

    🙂

You must make up for that windowless office as much as you can. I did that for a little while, and found it very difficult. Had to escape. 🙂

    Nice photos!

Great photographs. I think the lack of color makes them more interesting to view.

I work in a windowless office, too. Oh, the suffering! These pictures are fantastic – thank you for helping brighten my otherwise dreary day with your photos.

Wow, I guess I should be greatful I have a window. I didn’t realize what a commodity it was.

Keep it up–I suggest perusing Vivian Maier’s work for inspiration.

thanks! I’m really fond of Maier’s work, and am hoping that a retrospective will come to NYC some time soon.

I really like black and white photography. It has that feeling of contrast; black or white, big or small, dark or light, and small or big. It just seems to touch one’s creativity more than just color photography!

  12. 6 Apr 2011 4:37 pm

super dope pics, i was looking to get a leica but i am broke. really like your blog as a whole

  13. 6 Apr 2011 4:38 pm

Enjoyed the photos. I think the subway shot might be my favorite.

  14. 6 Apr 2011 5:19 pm

Wonderful! You’re black and white photos capture the depth of humanity, I find. Perhaps it’s the vivid starkness, lack of color thingy.

    Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!

Very beautiful!! Love black and white. Thank you!

Whoa, these are lovely. Esp. the shot in the train station. I use a point and shoot anymore & miss the ability to create depth of field. Very nice stuff.

  22. 6 Apr 2011 10:11 pm

Beautiful Pictures. I love the train station and gallery photos most of all.

  23. 6 Apr 2011 10:26 pm

    Superb shots.

Want to know more about the windowless office though; sounds nightmarish. My office gives me a small view of the sky. If it’s sunny its very depressing as I then feel trapped in the grey office.

  24. 6 Apr 2011 10:27 pm

Great shots! Congrats on being FP, you obviously deserve it with these little beauties.

  25. 6 Apr 2011 10:56 pm

Oh, I love your shots. I LOVE black and white shots. Just got my first digital camera and am working through a Photography 101 kind of textbook right now. I’ll be studying your photos, heheh.

Is that DURIAN I see hanging in the fruit stand? Last school year I lived in China. I still sometimes walk into Walmart and expect to be hit with a wall of Durian stench. I miss China, but I don’t miss durian.

Great photos! I can’t believe you managed to find some Durian fruit in your second last photo. Their considered the King of Fruits in my country. Did it stink?

    • 7 Apr 2011 1:52 pm

I didn’t get close enough to catch the smell — I don’t think it stinks until you crack it open, though!

  31. 7 Apr 2011 2:04 am

These black and white shots are so candid and fascinating! Thanks for sharing. Never been to Brooklyn, or any big American city, but these actually make me want to visit! (Most photos don’t…these really portray humans and humanity very well.)
