east broadway.

16 May 2012

One of my favorite vantage points in all of New York City is this spot on the southern side of the Manhattan Bridge — the pedestrian side, for all you cyclists who don’t know that the northern side is yours — right where it crosses over East Broadway.  Every time I walk across the bridge I try to snap a photograph.   The shot above was taken in the early afternoon this past Sunday, on a long walk from the Brooklyn Promenade, over the bridge, and into the Lower East Side.

It’s such a vibrant street, and I love the way the colors and the mood of the street changes in different light conditions.  To wit:

And even a badly-processed roll from CVS (thanks a lot, guys) can’t take away from the electricity of the place:

These are stunning pix — what a vibrant, cool place!

I’m absolutely stunned at the lack of cars, though…of course, I’m a West Coaster, so it may be a naive assumption that ALL of New York is bustling with bumper-to-bumper cars…

    😉

This beautiful series of photographs was taken from the Manhattan Bridge as it crosses over East Broadway in New York’s Chinatown. This is one of my favorite streets in the entire city.

  13. 18 May 2012 7:58 pm

Very nice! The building on the left side of the photo changes color dramatically. Even the fire escape changes color during the day.

Fantastic! You’ve captured the vibrancy and spirit of aliveness that is the heart of New York. I’m obsessed with the city and I’m so jealous you get to live there!

  20. 18 May 2012 9:18 pm

That’s a great view, one beautifully evoked in your images. I always look for it when on the train coming over the Manhattan Bridge. I’ve yet to walk across but I will do someday soon!

  21. 18 May 2012 9:26 pm

Your pictures are great for my eyes…

  22. 18 May 2012 9:57 pm

Great photos. Except for a couple of the skyscrapers in the back and the models of cars, these photos could have come from the 1940’s/50’s. They have that poignant, almost elusive nostalgia that brings to memory photos of this great city in another generation. Quite an accomplishment in a “modern” photo, and an excellent collection. Thank you for sharing them.

If I could visit any city in the U.S. it would definitely be New York–I’ve always wanted to go there! These views are spectacular–when I think of Broadway I think of the stage plays–I didn’t know there was more to Broadway, and there obviously is–much more. It’s looks like a Chinese section–cool! It’s just so magnificent, the height of the buildings, the energy of the living streets, and of course the colors!

Excellent photography! I love the fact you shoot with film 99% of the time. It makes for the traditional feel which I love in design. Also, the use of the photos themselves and the different lighting scenes makes a real picture! I am now following your blog and cannot wait to see more your talents in photography!

  86. 20 May 2012 8:48 pm

this part of town was something that had to grow on me…but now that it has, i have an insatiable desire to visit at least once a week. it’s the noise, the peeling paint of vibrant colors, the smells both good and bad, the majestic view of the [albeit less interesting] financial district far ahead, the secrets behind each door on the street…
